Lake Königssee

Excursion to Schönau am Königssee
Surrounded by impressive mountain scenery, the Berchtesgaden Alps offer an extraordinary perspective of Lake Königssee.
You can gaze in wonder at Germany's cleanest lake while hiking or during a boat trip across Lake Königssee to St. Bartholomew's pilgrimage church.

Lake Königssee is five square kilometres in area and was formed after the ice age. No wonder it's one of the most loved destinations in the Berchtesgadener Land region! The scenery here can't be found anywhere else. The crystal clear lake, situated right in the middle of pristine countryside, is surrounded by cliffs and some of the Berchtesgadener Land region's most stunning mountain views.

Lake Königssee is more than seven kilometres in length, is about 190 metres deep and forms part of the Berchtesgaden National Park.

It's not just the view of Lake Königssee which is unforgettable. This mountain lake is also famous for its echo, which reverberates from the surrounding mountains. The best way to experience Lake Königsee is by boat.

A boat trip across the lake will take you to St. Bartholomä, where you can visit the famous pilgrimage church.

In St. Bartholomä, the royal hunting château is also worth a visit. This used to be a safe haven and hunting lodge belonging to the Bavarian kings. Nowadays, the castle is a welcoming inn where you can soak up some local history before taking the boat back.

It would be obvious to assume that Lake Königssee is so named because of the royal hunting château – the German word "König" means "king". Apparently, however, the name is actually derived from "Kuno", which was the name used by its founding family. This is because, when the lake was named, the local area didn't belong to any particular kingdom. In 1454, people started calling it the "Kunigsee" which is where, one assumes, the current name comes from.

Lake Königssee is a picturesque area which you should definitely visit as part of your holiday in Berchtesgaden. The town of Schönau am Königssee, where the boats are located, is only about ten minutes from the EDELWEISS hotel and spa.
