When the scent of roasted almonds is in the air, wild figures in fur and straw with bells, and loud shots sound from afar, the Berchtesgaden Advent is well underway. On the first Advent weekend every year, the historic town centre of Berchtesgaden is transformed into a Christmas setting with over 50 huts, where local traditions, craftsmanship and Bavarian delicacies can be enjoyed. Right in the middle of the action is the Hotel EDELWEISS Berchtesgaden, which invites its guests to relax and enjoy after many festive hours at the Advent market.
When the fifth season starts in Berchtesgaden with its popular town centre Advent market from 24th November to 31st December, this also means the start of the winter season. Idyllically framed by the Royal Palace, historic town houses and the Hotel EDELWEISS Berchtesgaden, the lovingly decorated Advent huts with their regional delicacies and craftsmanship provide an atmospheric setting with historical flair. While parents stroll through the festively decorated alleys in front of an impressive mountain backdrop accompanied by alpine folk music, the children can let off steam on the carousel, at the animal enclosure and Christmas tree labyrinth. This is new this year for the Children’s Advent. The little ones can get creative baking Christmas cookies in the children’s bakery and painting in the painting workshop. A real highlight awaits visitors on 5th December. Here, on St. Nicholas’ Day, angels, traditionally dressed straw men and devils accompany St. Nicholas through the streets of Berchtesgaden. The imposing figures decorated with fur, straw and bells are reminiscent of the old Celtic era and impress the many onlookers year after year. One week before Christmas, Berchtesgaden is characterised by the Bavarian Advent customs around the Baby Jesus. Every day at 3 p.m., the Baby Jesus is loudly greeted with short-barrelled, large-calibre hand-guns from the Berchtesgaden United Christmas Shooters, which have been a part of Bavaria’s cultural heritage since 2018.
