Much emphasis is placed on the preservation of old customs in the region. From the end of November, traditions and customs are lived and passed on to the younger generation with care.
Particularly popular and widely known is the Berchtesgaden Advent Market in the heart of Berchtesgaden, in the pedestrian zone around the Hotel EDELWEISS. Many can hardly wait when the historic town center once again forms the atmospheric backdrop and is decorated for Christmas. Over 50 Advent huts offer guests and visitors local traditions, handicrafts or Bavarian delicacies.

The Berchtesgadener Advent attracts with its carousel, animal enclosures and a Christmas tree maze.

On December 5 and 6, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., the Buttnmandl will parade from the barracks in Bischofswiesen via the Gebirgsjägerstraße and the Gmundberg to the market town of Berchtesgaden.
Firecracker shots, rattling of chains and ringing of bells to drive away the cold, gloomy season as well as to welcome the christ child.
The incense of house and yard is one of the oldest rituals and is used especially at Christmas time. It serves the purification, should protect against evil and bring blessings and health into the home
The bosna is a traditional dish at Bavarian Christmas markets. It consists of a spiced bratwurst offered in a sliced white bread and garnished with mustard and onions.
The most famous handicraft of the region is the "Berchtesgadener War": The wooden handicraft products were traditionally as currently handmade and painted and can be purchased at the Advent market.
Part of the culture here in Berchtesgaden is brass music. The "Weisenbläser" provide Christmas sounds at the Christkindlmarkt.
